Why Emergency Searches Are the Most Valuable Calls You Can Get
A burst pipe at midnight. A locked-out homeowner in the rain. A boiler that dies on Christmas Eve. These are not casual browsing moments. The person searching is stressed, urgent, and ready to call the first business that looks trustworthy. They are not comparing five quotes or reading blog posts. They want a phone number, and they want it now.
For tradespeople like plumbers, locksmiths, and heating engineers, emergency calls are often the highest-value work available. The jobs pay well because of the urgency, the conversion rate from call to booking is extremely high, and there is very little price negotiation. The customer needs help and they need it immediately.
The question is: how do you make sure your business is the one that appears when those searches happen? The answer almost always comes back to your Google Business Profile.

How Emergency Searches Work on Google
When someone types "emergency plumber near me" or "24-hour locksmith Wrexham" into their phone, Google does not show a neat list of ten blue links. It shows the local map pack. those three business listings with phone numbers, reviews, and directions. On mobile, which is where the vast majority of emergency searches happen, the map pack dominates the entire screen.
The businesses that appear in that map pack are chosen based on a combination of factors: proximity to the searcher, the relevance of your profile to the search terms, and the overall prominence of your listing. That prominence comes from reviews, profile completeness and the signals Google has collected over time.
This means that if you want emergency calls, you need to be visible in the map pack for emergency-related searches in your area. Everything else is secondary.
Set Your Business Hours to Show Availability
This sounds obvious, but a surprising number of tradespeople get it wrong. If your Google Business Profile shows that you close at five o'clock, Google is less likely to show your listing for late-night emergency searches. The algorithm factors in your stated hours when deciding who to display.
If you genuinely offer emergency or out-of-hours services, your profile needs to reflect that. Set your hours to 24 hours for the days you are available, or extend them to cover evenings and weekends at minimum. A gas engineer who shows availability until ten at night is far more likely to appear for a "no heating tonight" search than one whose profile says they closed at half past four.
You can also use the "More hours" feature to add specific categories like "Emergency hours" if your trade supports it. This gives Google additional signals about when you are available.
Emergency searches are the most valuable leads on Google — the customer needs help right now and will call the first business they see.
Use the Services Section for Emergency Keywords
Your Google Business Profile has a services section where you can list what you offer. Most tradespeople either leave this blank or fill it with vague descriptions. For emergency visibility, you need to be specific.
If you are a plumber, add services like "Emergency plumbing," "Burst pipe repair," "Blocked drain emergency," and "24-hour callout." If you are a locksmith, add "Emergency lockout service," "24-hour lock repair," and "Broken lock replacement." We cover this in detail in our guide to the GBP services section.
Google uses the text in your services section to understand what your business does. If the word "emergency" does not appear anywhere in your profile, you are making it harder for Google to match you with emergency searches.
Reviews That Mention Emergencies Carry Extra Weight
This is one of the most overlooked factors. When a customer leaves a review that says "Called them at midnight with a burst pipe and they were here within an hour". that review is doing more than building trust with future customers. It is telling Google that your business handles emergency plumbing calls in that area.
Review text is a significant ranking factor. Google reads and processes the content of every review. If multiple reviews mention "emergency," "out of hours," "late night," or "weekend callout," your profile builds relevance for those exact search terms.
You cannot control what customers write, but you can gently prompt them. After an emergency job, a message like "Thanks for choosing us last night. if you have a moment, a Google review mentioning the work we did would really help other people in the same situation find us" works well. Most customers who have just been helped out of a genuine emergency are happy to leave a positive review. For more practical methods, see our guide on getting more Google reviews.
If you list 24/7 hours but don't answer after-hours calls, negative reviews will follow. Only set extended hours if you can genuinely respond.
Google Posts and Emergency Visibility
Google Posts are short updates that appear on your Business Profile. They last for about a week before expiring, which makes them ideal for timely, seasonal content. For emergency visibility, regular posts that mention your emergency services keep those keywords fresh in Google's index.
A post that says "Available for emergency boiler repairs this weekend across Bangor and Gwynedd. Call us 24/7 for same-day service" does two things. It tells potential customers you are available, and it tells Google your business is active and relevant to those search terms. Read more about how Google Posts help your profile.
Aim for at least one post per week that mentions your emergency availability. Vary the wording and the locations you mention to cover a broader range of search terms.
Phone-First Means Mobile-First
Emergency searchers are almost always on their phone. They are standing in a puddle, locked outside their house, or sitting in a cold living room. They are not on a laptop browsing carefully. They need to tap a phone number and call.
This means your Google Business Profile must have your phone number prominently displayed and correct. It sounds basic, but we have audited dozens of profiles across North Wales where the phone number was wrong, missing, or pointed to a landline that nobody answers after six o'clock.
If you offer emergency services, the number on your profile should be one that you actually answer at the times you claim to be available. A missed call from an emergency search is a lost customer. And they will not call back. They will call the next business in the list.
Your website matters too. If a searcher taps through to your site instead of calling directly, the site needs to load fast, show your phone number clearly, and make it obvious that you handle emergencies. A slow-loading page with a contact form buried three clicks deep will lose emergency customers every time. You can learn more about how your website affects your GBP ranking.
Google Guaranteed and Local Services Ads
In some areas and for some trades, Google offers a "Google Guaranteed" badge through its Local Services Ads programme. This is a paid placement that appears at the very top of search results. above the map pack, above everything. You pay per lead rather than per click, and the Google Guaranteed badge gives customers extra confidence because Google backs the work with a money-back guarantee.
For emergency-focused trades like locksmiths and plumbers, this can be extremely effective. The combination of top placement and a direct call button means very high conversion rates. The cost per lead is typically between £15 and £40 depending on the trade and area, which is often very good value for emergency work that may be worth several hundred pounds.
Not every trade or area is eligible yet, but it is worth checking whether your business qualifies. It works alongside your regular Google Business Profile, not instead of it.
Building an Emergency Reputation Over Time
Getting emergency calls from Google is not something you switch on overnight. It builds up through consistent effort across several months. Every review that mentions an emergency job strengthens your profile. Every post that references out-of-hours availability adds signals. Every month with accurate, extended hours tells Google your business is reliable and active.
The tradespeople who dominate emergency searches in their area have usually been working at it for a year or more. They have dozens of reviews mentioning emergency work, a complete and active profile, and a reputation that Google trusts enough to put in front of stressed, urgent searchers.
Start by auditing your current profile. Our free audit will tell you whether your profile is set up to capture emergency searches or whether you are invisible when it matters most. From there, it is a matter of filling in the gaps and staying consistent.
Emergency work is not just lucrative. it builds your reputation faster than almost anything else. A homeowner you help at midnight will remember you and almost certainly leave a review. That review brings the next emergency call. And the cycle continues.
