The Complete Google Business Profile Guide for Plumbers

Everything a plumber needs to set up and optimise their Google Business Profile to win more local work, from categories and services to photos, reviews, and Google Posts.

Why Your Google Business Profile Matters More Than Your Website

If you are a plumber and you are not paying attention to your Google Business Profile, you are handing work to your competitors. When someone has a burst pipe at 10pm or needs a new boiler fitted, they pick up their phone and search "plumber near me." Google does not show them a list of websites. It shows them the Map Pack. three local businesses with reviews, photos, and a phone number ready to tap.

Your GBP is your shopfront on Google. It is free to set up, free to maintain, and it directly influences whether you get that emergency call or someone else does. This guide covers everything you need to know, step by step, to turn your Google Business Profile into a genuine lead generator for your plumbing business.

Choosing the Right Categories

Your primary category should be Plumber. This is non-negotiable. Google uses your primary category as the strongest signal for which searches you appear in. If you set it to something vague like "Home Improvement" or "Contractor," you will struggle to rank for plumbing-specific searches.

Secondary categories let you tell Google about the full range of work you do. For most plumbers, these are worth adding:

  • Heating Contractor (if you do boiler installs or central heating)
  • Water Heater Installation Service
  • Bathroom Remodeler (if you fit bathrooms)
  • Drain Cleaning Service
  • Gas Engineer (if you hold a Gas Safe certificate)

Do not add categories you cannot genuinely deliver on. Google checks, and customers will leave bad reviews if your profile promises something you do not offer. We covered how categories affect your ranking in our guide to GBP categories. it is worth reading if you want to understand the logic behind Google's system.

Setting Up Your Services Section

The services section is one of the most underused parts of a plumber's GBP. You can add specific services with descriptions, and Google uses these to match you with relevant searches.

Think about the actual jobs customers search for:

  • Emergency plumbing / burst pipe repair
  • Boiler installation and replacement
  • Boiler servicing and repair
  • Central heating installation
  • Radiator installation and repair
  • Bathroom fitting and installation
  • Toilet repair and replacement
  • Tap installation and repair
  • Leak detection and repair
  • Blocked drain clearance
  • Power flushing
  • Underfloor heating installation
  • Water softener installation
  • Thermostatic valve fitting

For each service, write a short description (two or three sentences) that includes the area you cover and what the customer can expect. Do not stuff keywords in. write it like you are explaining the service to a homeowner who just called you.

Plumbing is the most competitive trade on Google. which means half-measures won't cut it. Your profile needs to be fully optimised or you're invisible.

Your Business Description

You get 750 characters for your business description. Use them wisely. Cover who you are, what you do and why someone should choose you. Mention your qualifications. Gas Safe registration, years of experience, any manufacturer accreditations.

A solid description for a plumber might be: "Family-run plumbing and heating business serving North Wales since 2009. Gas Safe registered for all boiler and central heating work. We cover emergency callouts, bathroom installations and general plumbing repairs across Rhyl, Prestatyn and surrounding areas. No call-out charge for local jobs. Free quotes on all work."

Notice how that naturally includes services and a reason to call. without reading like a keyword list.

Photos That Win You Work

Plumbing is not glamorous, but the right photos make a real difference. Customers want to see that you are professional and trustworthy. Here is what to photograph:

Before and after shots are gold for plumbers. A cramped airing cupboard with an ancient boiler, then the same space with a neat new installation, that tells a story. A bathroom stripped back to bare walls, then the finished product with new suite and tiling, even better.

Your van with your branding on it. This signals legitimacy and professionalism. You in uniform or workwear, ideally on a job site. Neat pipework. other tradespeople appreciate tidy work, and homeowners notice it too.

Upload new photos every couple of weeks. Google rewards profiles that are regularly updated with fresh content. You do not need to hire a photographer. a decent phone camera and good lighting are enough.

If you are a plumber in North Wales, the competition for photo quality is still surprisingly low. Most local plumbing profiles have zero photos or a single blurry logo. Even five or six good job photos will put you ahead of 80% of competitors.

Plumber GBP Essentials

Use 'Plumber' as primary category. Add services with prices. Upload 25+ photos of real jobs. Post weekly. Aim for 5+ new reviews per month. Set accurate service areas.

Getting Reviews (and What to Do With Them)

Reviews are the single biggest factor in whether someone picks your number out of the Map Pack. A plumber with 47 reviews and a 4.8 rating will get more calls than one with 3 reviews and a 5.0 rating. Volume matters.

The best time to ask for a review is immediately after you have finished a job and the customer is happy. Send them a direct link to your review page. you can generate this from your GBP dashboard. A simple text message works well: "Thanks for choosing us today. If you have a moment, a Google review would really help our small business: [link]."

Respond to every review. Thank people for positive ones. For negative reviews, stay professional and offer to resolve it offline. Your response is as much for future customers reading it as it is for the reviewer.

Google Posts for Plumbers

Google Posts appear directly on your profile and give you a way to communicate with potential customers before they even visit your website. Most plumbers ignore this feature entirely, which means it is a straightforward way to stand out.

What to post:

  • Seasonal tips: "How to prevent frozen pipes this winter" (November/December)
  • Completed project showcases with photos
  • Special offers: "Free boiler health check with every service this month"
  • Availability updates: "Emergency slots available this weekend"
  • New service announcements: "Now offering underfloor heating installation"

Post every week or two. Posts expire after seven days (offers) or six months (updates), so regular posting keeps your profile fresh. Our article on making the most of Google Posts has more detail on what works and what does not.

Common Mistakes Plumbers Make on GBP

Using a PO Box or virtual address. Google will eventually catch this and suspend your profile. If you work from home, set yourself as a service area business and hide your address. We covered suspension risks in detail in our GBP suspension guide.

Not setting service areas correctly. If you cover Rhyl and Colwyn Bay, set those as your service areas. Do not just list your home town and hope Google works it out. Our service area settings guide walks through exactly how to configure this.

Ignoring the Q&A section. Anyone can ask (and answer) questions on your profile. Check it regularly. Better yet, pre-populate it with common questions: "Do you offer emergency callouts?", "Are you Gas Safe registered?", "Do you charge for quotes?"

Letting your profile go stale. A profile with no new photos and no recent reviews looks abandoned. Google notices, and so do customers.

Tracking What Works

Your GBP dashboard shows you how many people viewed your profile, how many called you and how many clicked through to your website. Check these numbers monthly. If calls are dropping, it might be time to push for more reviews, update your photos, or post more frequently.

For a more detailed explanation of what these numbers mean, read our guide to reading GBP Insights. Understanding your data helps you make better decisions about where to focus your time.

What to Do Next

If your GBP is bare or out of date, start with the basics: correct categories, a complete services list and five to ten photos. Then focus on building your review count. Those three things alone will move you up the Map Pack in most local areas.
