Google Business Profile for Electricians

Most people searching for an electrician are either dealing with a problem right now or getting quotes for a job. Either way, your GBP profile is often the first thing they see. and most electrician profiles are missing half the information customers need to pick up the phone.

Why Google Business Profile matters for Electricians

When someone searches 'electrician near me' they're shown a map pack of three businesses. The businesses in that pack get the majority of clicks. If you're not there, you're invisible regardless of how long you've been trading.

Electricians deal with two types of customers: emergency calls (a trip switch, power loss, sparking socket) and planned work (rewires, new builds, consumer unit upgrades). Your GBP profile needs to serve both. Emergency customers want to see your phone number, current hours, and recent reviews. Planned work customers want photos of your work and evidence you know what you're doing.

A weak profile usually means missing services, no photos of finished installations, hours that haven't been updated in months, and a description that says nothing useful. Google sees this as a less active business and ranks you lower.

When Local Markers audits an electrician's profile, we typically fix the category setup first, then add services for each type of work, then build up the photo library systematically.

The right GBP categories for Electricians

Choosing the right categories is one of the biggest ranking factors for Google Maps. Here's what we recommend.

Primary Category
Electrician
Secondary Categories
Electrical installation service Solar energy company Fire protection service

Stick to 3-4 secondary categories. More than that can dilute your relevance signal.

What we find when we audit an electrician's GBP

When we audit an electrician's profile, we typically find the business description hasn't been updated since setup, there are fewer than five photos, and the services list is completely blank. Google can't rank you for specific work if you haven't told it what you do.

Photo strategy for Electricians

The right photos build trust before customers even call. Here's what to upload to your GBP.

1

Outside shot of your van parked at a job, include a house number or street name if the customer is happy. This confirms you work in the local area.

2

Consumer unit before and after, this single photo type drives more enquiries for electricians than almost anything else. Shoot it square-on with the cover open showing neat wiring.

3

EV charger installations, photograph the charger on the wall, the cable management, and the nearby distribution board.

4

Smart home or lighting installations, show the finished result in a room with decent lighting.

5

You and your ID, a photo holding your NICEIC or NAPIT card signals competence instantly.

6

Solar panel inverter and consumer unit work, if you're doing any solar-associated electrical work, photograph the indoor installation.

Getting reviews as an electrician

Reviews are the second biggest ranking factor for Google Maps. Here's how to build a consistent stream.

The best time to ask for a review is the moment you finish the job and the customer has seen the result. Say: 'Really glad that's sorted for you. Would you mind leaving a Google review? It takes about 60 seconds.' Then send them your review link by text before you drive off.

For planned jobs like rewires or consumer unit upgrades, send a follow-up text 24 hours after completion.

Example script for emergency callout: 'Really pleased we could get you sorted quickly. Reviews really help tradespeople like me show up when people need urgent help, if you have two minutes, here's my Google link: [link]'

Common GBP mistakes Electricians make

We see these on almost every profile we audit.

Setting 'Electrician' as the only category and ignoring 'Electrical installation service', these are different categories with different search volumes.

Not listing specific services. Google uses your services list to match your profile to searches like 'fuse board replacement near me'.

Leaving the business description as the default or using vague language like 'quality electrical services'.

Not responding to reviews, especially negative ones.

Using a PO box or office address when you work from home. Set up a service area instead.

Uploading stock photos. Google knows they're not yours.

Quick wins you can do yourself

Steps you can take right now to improve your listing.

1

3

Fill in every service you offer: consumer unit replacement, EV charger installation, lighting installation, socket installation, rewire, PAT testing.

4

Write a business description of 200–250 words. Include your qualifications (NICEIC/NAPIT), the areas you cover, and how long you've been trading.
