How Google Business Profile Works If You Don't Have a Business Address

Many sole traders and small trade businesses operate from home or a vehicle with no separate commercial premises. Google Business Profile is fully available to you. but the setup works differently.

Running a business without a separate commercial address does not exclude you from Google Business Profile. Whether you work from home, a van, or simply have no premises that customers visit, you can still have a fully active, well-ranked listing.

Google classifies these businesses as service area businesses (SABs). The way your listing works differs from a storefront in a few important ways.

What Google means by a service area business

A service area business is one where you travel to customers rather than customers coming to you. Most tradespeople, plumbers, electricians, heating engineers, roofers, decorators, fall into this category, regardless of whether they have a home base.

Google fully supports this model. Service area businesses make up a significant portion of all Business Profile listings.

Service area businesses can hide their address while keeping full visibility

Whether to show your address

If you work from home and do not want your home address publicly displayed, Google allows you to hide it. You still need to enter your real address during the setup process, Google uses it for verification, but you can choose not to show it on your public profile.

With your address hidden, your listing will still appear in Maps as a pin in your general area. Your service area towns remain visible on your profile. Hiding the address does not reduce your ability to rank.

If you have a yard, storage unit, or commercial space, even one that customers do not visit, you may prefer to show that as your address. Either approach is supported.

Running a business from home doesn't mean your Google profile should look any less professional than a business with a shopfront.

How ranking works for service area businesses

For businesses with a physical storefront, Google gives significant weight to proximity. For service area businesses, proximity still matters, but Google relies more on the combination of your service area settings, your profile completeness, your review count, and your overall activity level.

This means a sole trader based in a small village can still rank well across a wide area if their profile is well maintained and their service area is set correctly. Your home base matters less than it would for a storefront business.

SAB Setup

When setting up as a service area business, remove your street address completely. Google still verifies your location but hides it from the public.

Verification

All Google Business Profiles must be verified before they go live. For service area businesses, the most common method is a postcard sent to your address, which typically arrives within one to two weeks.

In some cases, Google offers video verification as an alternative. a short video call where you show your business location and any branded vehicle or equipment. Where available, this is faster than waiting for a postcard.

Common issues to avoid

Using a virtual office or mail forwarding address is against Google's guidelines. These addresses are cross-checked against third-party data, and a flagged address can lead to suspension. Always use your real address, even a home address.

Skipping service area setup is also a common mistake. A service area business without service areas configured is difficult to find outside of direct name searches. Service areas are not optional. they tell Google where you work.

If you and a family member each operate separate trade businesses from the same home address, keep the listings clearly distinguished with different business names, categories, and phone numbers.
