If your Google Business Profile phone number is not showing, every person who finds your listing and wants to call you is hitting a dead end. For a gas engineer or any UK tradesperson, that missing phone number translates directly into missed jobs and lost income. The "Call" button is one of the most used features on Google Business Profiles — when it is not there, you are invisible to the customers who are ready to hire.
The causes range from simple editing oversights to verification problems and Google's own suppression rules. This guide walks through each one so you can diagnose the issue and fix it fast.
Missing contact details means missed jobs — see how our service gets this right at setup so you never lose a lead to a technical problem.
Your phone number field is empty or incorrect
Start with the obvious. Sign into business.google.com and check your business information. Look at the phone number field and make sure it is filled in correctly.
Common mistakes include:
- The field is blank. If you recently created or edited your profile, you may have accidentally cleared the phone number without realising.
- The number has a typo. A single wrong digit means the number displays but does not work, which is arguably worse than it being missing entirely.
- The country code is wrong. UK numbers should be formatted as +44 followed by the number without the leading zero. Some profile editors handle this automatically, but manual entry can introduce errors.
Edit the field, enter your correct number, and save. Changes typically take 24 to 48 hours to appear on Maps and Search.
When your phone number differs across directories, Google may suppress it.
Most phone number fixes appear within three days of saving the edit.
Google is suppressing your phone number
Even if your phone number is correctly entered in your profile, Google may choose not to display it. This happens for several reasons:
Inconsistent NAP data. If your phone number on Google differs from the number listed on your website, directory listings, or social media profiles, Google may suppress the number it considers unverified. This is one of the most common causes and ties directly into your wider business citation health.
Check your phone number on Yell, Checkatrade, Thomson Local, your own website, and any other platforms where your business appears. Every single listing should show the same phone number, formatted the same way. Even having "0161 123 4567" in one place and "01611234567" in another can cause problems.
The number was flagged as spam. If your phone number has been reported as spam — perhaps by a caller-ID app or by users — Google may stop displaying it. This sometimes happens to tradespeople who do a lot of outbound calling for marketing purposes.
Google suspects the number belongs to a different business. If another Google Business Profile uses the same phone number, Google may suppress it on one or both listings. This can happen if you share a phone line with another business, or if a previous business at your address used the same number.
Your profile is not fully verified
Phone numbers may not display on unverified or partially verified profiles. Google restricts what information it shows to the public until it has confirmed your business is legitimate.
Check your verification status in the Google Business Profile dashboard. If there is a banner asking you to verify, complete the verification process first. Once verified, your phone number and other contact details should appear within a few days.
If you previously verified but your verification has lapsed — this can happen if you change your address or business name — you may need to re-verify before your phone number reappears.
A user or competitor has edited your listing
Google allows anyone to suggest edits to business listings on Maps. If someone has suggested removing your phone number or changing it to a different number, and the edit was accepted, your real number may have been overwritten or deleted.
Check the "Suggested edits" section in your dashboard. Look for any pending or recently accepted changes to your contact information. If you find one:
- Reject the suggestion if it is still pending
- Re-enter your correct phone number
- Save and monitor over the next few days to make sure it sticks
If edits keep being suggested and accepted, someone may be deliberately interfering with your listing. Document the pattern and report it to Google support. This kind of interference can also be a sign of a broader ownership dispute or competitor sabotage.
Set up Google notifications for your Business Profile so you receive an email whenever an edit is suggested. This lets you reject false changes within hours rather than discovering them weeks later.
Your primary and secondary phone numbers
Google Business Profile allows you to add a primary phone number and an additional phone number. The primary number is what appears on your listing and on the "Call" button in Maps.
If your primary number is a landline that you have recently disconnected, it may stop displaying even if your mobile number is listed as the secondary number. Google sometimes checks whether phone numbers are active, and an inactive primary number can cause display issues.
Best practice for tradespeople:
- Set your most reliable, always-answered number as the primary. For most sole traders, this is your mobile.
- Use your landline or office number as the secondary if you have one.
- If you use a call tracking number from a marketing service, be careful. These numbers change and can create inconsistency issues.
If you have recently changed your primary number, make sure the old number is not still listed as secondary or on any external directory. Conflicting numbers on the same profile confuse Google's systems.
When adding a number triggers re-verification
In some cases, changing or adding a phone number to your Google Business Profile triggers a re-verification request. Google does this to prevent unauthorised changes to contact details.
If you see a verification prompt after updating your phone number:
- Complete the verification using whichever method Google offers (postcard, phone call, text, or video)
- Do not skip this step — your updated phone number will not display until verification is complete
- Allow the standard verification timeframe (one to fourteen days depending on the method)
This is more likely to happen if you are changing to a completely different number rather than correcting a digit in your existing one.
Checking your number appears correctly
After making any changes, verify your phone number is showing correctly from the customer's perspective:
- Search for your business name on Google using an incognito/private browser window
- Check the Knowledge Panel on the right side of search results — is your number there?
- Open Google Maps and search for your business — does the "Call" button appear?
- If you have the Google Maps app on your phone, check there too — the app sometimes shows different information from the desktop version
If your number appears in some places but not others, give it 48 to 72 hours. Google's different platforms cache data at different rates.
If you have also noticed your address is wrong on Google Maps, fix both issues at the same time. Multiple incorrect contact details compound the trust problems Google has with your listing.
Stop losing calls — get your profile checked
A missing phone number is one of the simplest problems to fix, but it is also one of the most costly when left unresolved. Every day without a visible number is a day of missed enquiries from people who were ready to hire you.
For gas engineers wanting a free GBP audit, we check your phone number, address, categories, verification status, and dozens of other factors that affect whether customers can contact you.
